Our Patients

There is an unmet need of renal care treatments that preserve quality of life. We hope to be the solution.

Our prospective patients have been diagnosed with Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), otherwise known as End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and receive hemodialysis treatment at an outpatient clinic run by a dialysis service provider. This group consists of approximately 468,000 patients across 6,000 centers.

According to Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 10 Americans are diagnosed with CKD and approximately 700,000 of whom have ESRD. ESRD patients have 2 treatment options: dialysis or transplant. The latter is not always recommended due to the extensive surgery, nor is it always available. There are 93,000 patients currently on the transplant waiting list in the US. The majority of patients receive hemodialysis treatment 3 times a week, in which blood is filtered through a device and returned to the patient.

Life on conventional hemodialysis is often described as miserable and painful. The leading cause of death among dialysis patients over the age of 70 and second overall is voluntary discontinuation of treatment. Cramps, fatigue, and fainting are some short-term symptoms that patients experience. Cardiac arrest, myocardial ischemia, malnutrition, hypotension, and depression are some long-term, potentially fatal consequences.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid are under pressure to cut spending on renal care, which threatens the very system it oversees. Service providers are under more scrutiny to save costs while raising patient care standards. And the patient population is growing in a healthcare environment that is becoming less favorable for their well-being.
